Marvin Winans Jr.

Donning a beautiful wife on his right arm at celebrity functions, and dressed in the best of contemporary fashion, Marvin may look like the typical, surface, image driven, young man modern society has become used to seeing, but Marvin, however is quick to mention that what can’t be seen is what is most important. “I want to show the world how to live the ‘complete’ lifestyle. My music is my voice, my life is my light.” Marvin seems, without a doubt, ready for pop success and public attention, but as the last name denotes, he is no stranger to a mainstream audience.

Born to Marvin L. Winans, Sr., leader of the famed gospel cross over group “The Winans”, and songstress and gospel great, Vickie Winans, on December 28, 1979, Marvin began capturing the hearts of audiences at the early age of 5. Growing up, Marvin inherited musical prowess, and as a first-hand witness, he watched his family grow from small beginnings to international success.

Marvin’s father and uncles, “The Winans”, broke into the mainstream with their debut album entitled, “Introducing the Winans”. In 1981, the song “Question Is” blazed its way into mainstream rotations across the country. Following several successful records throughout the 80’s, the four brothers made their lasting mark, worldwide, with their Gold-selling album, entitled, “Return”. “Return” was filled with hits such as “It’s Time” and “A Friend”, which were produced by Guy/BlackStreet founder/member and famous producer, Teddy Riley.

Since 1986, Marvin’s mother, Vickie Winans, has been known for not only a powerful voice, but for her beautiful and consuming personality. She is one of music’s most innovative and creative minds to date. Handling her own management, she performs and has performed approximately 220 shows a year, for the past 15 years. She endorses household corporate businesses, including Chrysler Financial and Quaker Oats, and has found time to produce Grammy-nominated records as well. She is well known for her songs, entitled, “We Shall Behold Him”, “Long As I Got King Jesus” and “Shake Yourself Loose”.

Marvin’s musical foundation doesn’t stop at his parents. His brother, Mario Winans made a big splash on the musical scene as a Bad Boy recording artist in 2004 with his hit single “I Don’t Want to Know”. The album, entitled, “Hurt No More”, sold 1.3 million copies and reached the top 5 on the Top 200 Billboard album charts. He has also produced for the who’s who of R&B and Pop music including, J-Lo, Justin Timberlake and Diddy.

Marvin’s uncle and aunt, Bebe and Cece Winans, whose names, alone, are as well known as their music, are one of the most successful music duos in music history. Routinely, selling platinum albums, they too, took mainstream radio by force with well written, message driven hits, entitled, “Heaven”, “Addictive Love”, and “It’s O.K.”. When considering all Winans projects, including his grandparents, David and Delores and all ten of their children, the Winans family has won over 40 Grammy Awards and sold millions upon millions of records! So it’s clear why Marvin Winans Jr. is ready for mainstream success!

Marvin’s first passion ironically, was not music. He first desired to follow in the footsteps of his childhood hero and basketball great, Isiah Thomas. However, his passion for music soon overtook any desires to play professional basketball. Thankfully, he did not have to look far for another role model. Amazed by his father’s jaw-dropping performances with “The Winans”, Marvin Jr. loved to mirror every move Marvin Sr. made on stage.

His desire to write songs and produce music grew strong as he watched his older brother, Mario, develop his production skills in the basement of their home. He also studied his father when he used the living room piano to write songs that later became world re-known. Inevitably, the writing bug also bit Marvin and at the age of 10 with his first attempt at songwriting, entitled, “People”, he stumbled into the family business!

At the age of 16, Marvin took his love for music to another level, forming his first ever singing group, “One Way”, with his cousin Michael Winans Jr. and friends, Karl Jackson and Lance Bennett. “One Way” performed their songs, “Never Leave Your Side” and “Stay with Me Lord”, at their first ever-appearance on New Year’s Eve, 1996, at Perfecting Church, in Detroit, MI, where Marvin’s father is the pastor.

“One Way” would only be a stepping-stone, as Marvin and Michael would join their cousins Carvin Jr. and Juan to form the third generation of Winans professional recording artists, “Winans Phase 2”. At the age of 18, Marvin along with his three cousins, Carvin, Michael and Juan signed a major recording deal with Myrrh/Epic Records. The group achieved tremendous success with their debut album entitled “We Got Next”, capturing fans internationally! Marvin and the Grammy-nominated group, debuted at #1 on Gospel Billboard charts, sold over 250,000 records and performed in front of crowds as large as 50,000, including shows in the U.S. and Europe (Germany, Holland, London, and Amsterdam). They also performed and were featured on several national television shows including The Oprah Winfrey Show, Donnie & Marie, and the Queen Latifah show. Known to their fans as “Phase 2”, Marvin, Carvin, Juan and Mike joined their entire family for a spectacular Winans Family Tour in 2002, touring 40 U.S. cities! What Marvin had accomplished thus far was only the beginning.

This singer/producer/songwriter is also the Founder and President/CEO of M2 Entertainment. Since its inception in November of 2000, M2 and Marvin have signed four producers and have produced many nationally released songs. He has also worked with the best producers in the music industry such as Cedric Caldwell (Cece Winans, Darwin Hobbs, Whitney Houston), Joshua Gin Ruben (BabyFace), Narada Michael Walden (Whitney Houston, Shanice),Warryn Campbell (Brandy, Yolanda Adams, Luther Vandross), Rodney and Fred Jerkins (Brandy, Michael Jackson, Beyonce), and Noel, “Detail”, Fisher (Ray-J, Mya, Akon).

What can we expect from the man that stems from 40 years of musical history?Currently, Marvin is excited to be releasing his debut solo album “Image of A Man”.

“I am excited to be able to speak to people through music once again,” Marvin explains. “I thank God for this opportunity to share with the world the gifts that he has given me!”

In this, his debut album, Marvin is allowing people to see a little deeper into who and what a man is. “A man” according to Marvin, “loves his wife, his family, his friends, and his enemies, but does it all through the love of Christ. “Without Jesus” he explains, “I wouldn’t have a life to live. Loving Him teaches me how to love everyone else around me. Loving Him is how I am able to do everything that I do! He is my rock, my strength, my source, my salvation and my foundation. How can I even attempt to be a man without Him? He is the essence of who we are, we were all made in HIS IMAGE.”

With Marvin at the helm of his new album, as a majority writer and producer, “Image of A Man” promises to be what you’ve been waiting for. With his “success and nothing less” mentality, Marvin Winans Jr. is sure to continue the legacy of greatness that has preceded him, and will leave his own mark on the world through music, entertainment, and in business alike!
