"It's Hip Hop, it's Rock, It's funk, it's fun." Metermaids represents a brand new sound in hip hop/pop music. Playing to crowds all across America, it's no wonder the Metermaids EP sustained a top 20 position on the CMJ Hip Hop charts for two months straight. Their broad appeal is undeniable. Whether it's a packed out college show, a showcase at SXSW, or a Saturday night at the Viper Room in L.A., Metermaids always rock the venue. As heard on MTV and late night FOX TV, "Don't Sleep", the first cut from the EP is a "classic hip hop/pop crossover." And the single 'Funk Terrorist' is a true party anthem that gets the audience dancing and screaming for more every time. Metermaids is two New York emcees, Swell and Sentence. Backed by the production prowess of 27 Sound founder Matt Stine, the package is complete. In 2006, Swell and Sentence signed separate agreements with independent production company/label, 27 Sound. It was their mutual respect for each other's talent that lead them to writing songs together. Fueled by the constant output of music from Stine's studio, the two emcees soon realized that they had something special. After a hugely successful debut as a duo at New York's legendary lower east side club, Sin-e, it was confirmed. Sentence officially joined Metermaids, and the results have been electric. Metermaids came to be in the winter of 2004 as the brainchild of Sean McGaughan (pka Swell). His first album was "New Jersey and California," a gritty mash-up of rock and roll samples, breakbeats, and heartfelt lyrics. Dynamic, fast, gritty, and beautiful, it was hip hop, but unlike any he had heard before. Since the independent release of "New Jersey and California" Metermaids has made their name on the quality of their live shows. Metermaids plays often in their home base of New York City, packing out clubs such as The Knitting Factory, Mercury Lounge, Sin-e, and CBGB's. A highlight of 2006 was a showcase performance at the North by Northeast music conference in Toronto, Canada, where Metermaids made Toronto's NOW Magazine's critic's list of sixteen must-see artists out of over 400 bands. Already in 2007, Metermaids has gone on two tours including a showcase at SXSW and a show at the world famous Viper Room in L.A. Sentence is an emcee/producer living in New York City. Before joining Metermaids, he made a name for himself in the world of Hip Hop by performing constantly across the US and releasing music. His last release, There and Back has been selling well from the US to Japan to England and made it to the top 20 on CMJ's hip hop charts. Some of the Hip Hop giants Sentence has performed with include KRS One, Aceyalone, Atmosphere, Aesop Rock, Lyrics Born, Black Sheep, Beat Junkies, Raekwon of Wu Tang Clan, Jungle Brothers, Blackalicious, Del The Funkee Homosapien, and many more." | |
