"I basically deejay and make records for 19 year olds. They are the median age group of the core Hip-Hop/ Rap/ R&B audiences. If I can make them move, then I can make anybody move. Making people move is my business". - DJ Clark Kent. DJ Clark Kent is one of the industry's hottest and most recognized producer and turntable superstars. To date, he has served as a Sr. Vice President of A&R at Motown Records, worked as a Director of A&R at Atlantic Records, and now heads his own record label, ClarkWorld Entertainment. As the CEO of Supermen Entertainment, Clark co-manages the music careers of five record producers, two songwriters, a stable of new artist and has produced and remixed an impressive list of hits for some of the music industry's biggest stars. His discography includes gold and multi-platinum hits for, The Notorious B.I.G., Mariah Carey, Busta Rhymes, SWV, Ice Cube, Rakim, The Fugees, Jay-Z, Lil' Kim and Junior M.A.F.I.A. Recently, Supermen Entertainment has partnered up with Cornerstone Promotions, one of the leading music promotion companies, to put the " Supermen DJ Battle for World Supremacy" back into full swing. In addition, Clark has been the Show DJ and music coordinator for numerous major tours such as P. Diddy, Jay-Z, Faith, Fabolous, Nas, Bubba Sparxx, and The Notorious BIG, just to name a few. Clark has performed (DJ) for the biggest and elite engagements, from Mariah Carey's "American Music Awards" Parties, P. Diddy's "MTV VMA Awards" After-Parties, P. Diddy's MTV New Years Soiree, Grammy Awards Parties, Usher Multi-Platinum Party, Stevie Wonder's Achievement Award Party, to the Infamous All-Star Basketball Parties, Miami, FL. Memorial Weekends and NFL Superbowl Parties, to name a few. His incredible ability to motivate party-goers has giving him the aptitude to performed for thousands stretching to the far corners of the world, Europe, Africa, Japan. None of the above is surprising considering Clark's amazing career history. He began his mastery of the wheels of steel, at the tender age of nine. "My uncle got me started as a DJ in the late '70's just before my 10th birthday," the Panamanian native recalls. "He was a friend of Kool Herc (the Father of Hip-Hop), and many other old school heads. So by being around these pivotal people, going to all the parties, and other places where the music was evolving, I learned how to deejay, and move the crowd. Ever since then, I've always known what I've wanted to do." As a youngster, hip-hop conclaves like The Fever, The Black Door, T-Connection, The Audubon, The Funhouse and The Latin Quarters were Clark's stomping grounds. It was in these historic nightclubs that he began building his reputation as a turntable terrorist. As his popularity grew, he eventually gained enough exposure to give his talent an international focus. Performing as an exhibition DJ, Clark then toured Europe, Japan, Africa, Australia, North America, and the Caribbean. However, as the times and music changed, he realized he also had to adjust. "It may have been because I was so young, but I was able to adapt to changing times, and evolve with the music, instead of falling behind, like a lot of people who refused to grow." Those early experiences made Clark realize that it was not just about keeping up, but staying ahead of the game that achieves career longevity. Attempting to capitalize on the respect earned within the music industry, Clark began to set his sights on music production. Remixes seemed like the natural route, and his career took off in the late 80's, when he was commissioned to remix "Spread My Wings," a major hit for the then hot R&B group, Troop. The commercial success of that remix opened many doors; enabling Clark to begin producing records for other recording artists. Alternatively, Clark also became more involved creatively within the structure of the major record labels. He was hand picked by Timmy Regisford, the then Vice-President of A&R at Motown, and convinced to take his talents to the next level by becoming an A&R man himself. Since then, Clark has had the opportunity to be at the career beginnings for many of rap's most talented stars. He has been responsible for, or played a key role in, the signing of major label recording deals for artists that include, Jay-Z, Das Efx, YoYo, Sauce Money, MC Lyte. Clark also found and signed the singing sensation 98 Degrees. This unusual collage of career experiences has greatly contributed to Clark's popularity as a record producer. His production services are in high demand, and he is constantly working in the recording studio. Clark is currently creating music for a long list of projects, many of which are scheduled for release. Clark is presently putting the finishing touch on his newest artist, Sandman's album, who is the newest elite artist on Interscope Records. As Clark puts it, "I found and warned people about Jay-Z in the beginning, now I'm warning them about Sandman!" Having been at hip-hop's epicenter for over two decades, it obvious that his mission is to elevate the power of urban music. DJ Clark Kent is a confident, multi-talented individual who seeks out new challenges. "Whether I'm performing live-on-stage, or producing records for Supermen Entertainment, or making important executive decisions on behalf of ClarkWorld Entertainment, I know I have to stay true to myself, the artists, the public and the game," he concludes. "That way when I go to bed at night, I know I did my best, and nobody can ask anybody for more than that." | |
