They are where the stylish want to be in relation to cool kids, music, and fashion.” –Paper Magazine The Misshapes are the trio behind the eponymous Saturday-night party "Misshapes" as well as trendsetters in their own right. The Misshapes began in February 2004, when their weekly party opened it’s doors for the first time. It’s a teenage rock ‘n’ roll dance party for young people in their late teens and early twenties, and it’s been going strong ever since. They have managed to become an intersection of music, art, and fashion and aside from their weekly night, they have provided music for a range of events hosted by institutions like the Whitney Museum and Museum of Contemporary Art to fashion world powerhouses like Chanel, Versace, and Calvin Klein just to name a few. The Misshapes will be releasing their first book on September 4th 2007 with MTV books and Power House Publishing.They have assembled this collection of portraits, edited by Misshapes member Geordon Nicol, as a document of their unique world. The portraits include cutting edge musicians, celebrities, artists, and designers, some from different generations, alongside the youth of down town New York. Madonna, Yoko Ono, Michael Stipe, Axl Rose, Kelis, Peaches, Hedi Slimane, Michel Gondry, Nan Goldin, Sienna Miller, Chloe Sevigny, Bloc Party, My Chemical Romance and many others are included. With each subject posed amidst the downtown scene’s dense and riotous environment. The contributing photographers also include some of the art, fashion and rock world’s biggest stars like Karl Lagerfeld, Ryan McGinley, and Nick Zinner. This summer The Misshapes, along with Debbie Harry, The Gossip, Erasure, Cyndi Lauper, The Dresden Dolls and host Margaret Cho for the inaugural True Colors Tour (dates in on www.myspace.com/themisshapes) in support of the Human Rights Campaign. The Misshapes were featured this Fall in an international campaign for charity organization ONE [www.one.org] shot by Helena Christensen. They will appear along side Heath Ledger, Michelle Williams, Jimmy Fallon, Rosario Dawson, Naiomi Watts, James Iha, Gabriel Byrne, Benjamin Cho, Peter Sarsgaard, and Russell Simmons. The ONE organization stands in an effort to rally Americans to fight the emergency of global AIDS and extreme poverty around the world. | |
